Paper wasps are the most common wasp around New Farm. They are slim, brown to orange with yellow bands, and fly with their long legs hanging down. Their nests are open grey combs with the cells facing down, hanging from a short stalk under verandahs, eaves, fence rails, pergolas and the leaves of shrubs and palms. A new nest in spring may be no bigger than a thumbnail.
They are not usually aggressive away from the nest, but they will defend it if someone gets close.
